Jill J. Smith

Jill J. Smith established her law practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1997. Since then, she has represented a wide variety of clients in employment law, land use and zoning, environmental, public lands and water law, Indian law, tax-exempt organization matters, and election and campaign finance law.
Jill served as the Executive Director of New Mexico Conservation Voters Alliance, New Mexico Conservation Education Fund, and Washington Wilderness Coalition. Jill was a founder, director, and reporter for Colorado-based Earth Information System (EIS), a satellite environmental news channel, and was publisher and editor of Aztlan Journal and Western Environmental Jobletter in Colorado.
Jill was the first to cover the news about the 1991 disastrous oil spill from the Japanese tanker off the coast of Neah Bay, Washington, home to the Makah Indian tribe. Most recently, Jill served as in-house counsel for the Pueblo of Sandia in New Mexico and as in-house counsel in the Office of Reservation Attorney for the Colville Confederated Tribes in Washington.
Jill is a graduate of Vermont Law School, where she won the Academic Excellence Award for Natural Resources Law, and top honors in Federal Indian Law. Jill currently serves on the board of Winter Wildlands Alliance.
